Abstract

The university extension is the factor through which the university interacts with the whole of society. Ing. Gustavo Menéndez, defines it in the following terms: "... extension is a process that

involves a communication with society, in which the university positions itself, speaks, builds relationships and representations; and is situated in front of the different sectors of society with which it interacts. " This is the object of our analysis.

Today society demands greater leadership by universities in terms of improving the quality of life of members of society in general, addressing issues such as drug prevention, crime, drug trafficking, among others, considering the risk factors that may have a negative effect on the population, as well as the protective factors that can be promoted from the university as a transversal axis of the curriculum. In this context, this project intends to carry out a documentary review of the actions that could be carried out from the university extension in some state and private higher education institutions of Panama, in order to describe university management and procedures which could constitute a program whose purpose is to intervene in society to promote better living conditions.
